Darlington Gacmadheere Foundation
The Darlington Gacmadheere FoundationThe Darlington Gacmadheere Foundation is a Somali based Education charity set up in memory of Richard Darlington who was nicknamed "Gacmadheere" by the locals.
Richard R. Darlington was born on 9 January 1919. He was educated at Harrow, and came up to Gonville and Caius in 1938 to study the Geographical Tripos, though his studies were interrupted by the WWII, and he therefore took his BA degree in 1948. He was the commander of the Somaliland Protectorate’s contingent that fought in Burma during WWII.
Our Aims
- Making university education in Somaliland more accessible through the provision of scholarships.
- Providing equal educational opportunities through the provision of university scholarships for female students and for those from disadvantaged backgrounds
- Assisting our alumni in their transition to the world of work
Changing lives, strengthening Somaliland society
The Foundation seeks to create the leaders of tomorrow
Nelson Mandela said ‘It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become head of the mine, that a child of farmworkers can become the President of a great nation.’ We believe the same. The Foundation was established in 2011 to help the best Somaliland students access Higher Education, fulfil their full potential and contribute to the strengthening of Somaliland society. We provide scholarships that cover both fees and the cost of books for students attending public or private university in Somaliland. We seek to ensure that our students are selected on merit from all regions of Somaliland and that female students are well represented. We have supported students at nine universities including Hargeisa, Amoud, Golis, Sanaag, Burao, Berbera and Nugaal.
